Hackathons in Denmark

Published on October 12, 2026

Looking for a hackathon in Denmark? This guide covers what to expect, who can take part and how to find an event, with Hack Esbjerg 2026 as the worked example. We organize it, so those are the numbers we can vouch for.

What a hackathon in Denmark looks like

A hackathon is an event where small teams build a working prototype against the clock and present it to a jury. If the format is new to you, start with what a hackathon is.

Hack Esbjerg 2026 followed the classic in-person format:

  • 24 hours of hacking, from the morning of March 19 to the afternoon of March 20, 2026
  • 100 hackers, students and professionals, all 18 or older
  • Teams of 2 to 4, formed before the event or at a team forming session right after the opening
  • 13 finished projects and 7 prize categories
  • Free entry, with the venue, meals, snacks and drinks covered by sponsors
  • Four workshops on the first afternoon and mentors on hand throughout

The event was part of the Major League Hacking 2026 season and took place at S-E-A Esbjerg. You can see what the teams built and who won.

Who can join

Most hackathons are open to more people than the name suggests. At Hack Esbjerg, complete beginners and experienced developers worked side by side, and designers and people who were simply curious about tech took part too. You do not need a team or an idea to sign up: many participants arrived alone and found teammates on the day.

English works fine. This site and our Discord are in English, and the tech community in Denmark is used to international students and colleagues.

How to find a hackathon in Denmark

  • Major League Hacking publishes its season of student hackathons, including the European ones.
  • Devpost lists in-person and online hackathons and lets you filter by location.
  • Universities and business academies announce events to their own students first, so check your school’s channels.
  • Local tech communities share events early. Ours lives on Discord.

When you compare events, check the dates, whether it runs overnight, the age limit, the team size, and whether food and a place to sleep are provided.

Getting to a hackathon outside Copenhagen

Not everything happens in the capital. Esbjerg is on the west coast of Jutland and has its own train station. In 2026, hackers took the train to Esbjerg Station and then a 15-minute bus or taxi ride to the venue, or drove and parked for free on site. The travel guide has the details.
